The South Australian CTP Scheme allows a motor vehicle owner to select an insurer at the time of vehicle purchase (excluding brand new vehicles) or when renewing registration. Your involvement, as an EzyReg delegate, and the steps to take are outlined below for each transaction involving CTP choice. If you are not a delegate, the steps are included in the usual transactions you process with Service SA.

Register a used vehicle in new owner’s name

The choice of CTP Insurer belongs to the customer purchasing a used vehicle.

To help your customer choose the CTP Insurer that best suits their needs, you or your customer can access CTP Insurer premium and Claimant Service Rating information through our easy to use CTP premium calculator. Having a link to this calculator on your computer’s desktop may work for your business.

Alternatively, you may prefer to access CTP Insurer premium and Claimant Service Rating information through the EzyReg ‘General Fees Enquiry’ transaction, which is first needed to produce a registration and CTP insurance quotation before performing the ‘Register a Used Vehicle in a New Owner’s Name’ transaction.

  1. The ‘General Fees Enquiry’ transaction’s ‘Insurer Selection’ screen shows CTP Insurer premiums and Claimant Service Rating information to help your customer choose.
  2. The ‘Fee Details’ screen displays the total applicable registration and CTP insurance fees for available registration periods.
  3. Print and retain the ‘Fee Details’ screen for the applicable CTP Insurer - as selected and signed or initialled by your customer.

The next step is the ‘Register a Used Vehicle in a New Owner’s Name’ transaction.

  1. The CTP Insurer chosen by your customer at the ‘General Fees Enquiry’ step is recorded on the ‘Insurer Selection’ screen.
  2. Progress through the remaining steps to complete the transaction.
  3. Once payment has been made, the registration receipt can be displayed on screen and printed. This will detail for your customer their chosen CTP Insurer and fees.

Register a brand new vehicle

Automatic allocation

When a brand-new vehicle, trailer, or caravan is purchased it is automatically allocated to one of the Government-approved CTP Insurers for CTP cover at the lowest premium price available in the market at the time of registration for the vehicle’s premium class. For this reason, insurer selection is not offered in the EzyReg ‘Register a New Vehicle’ transaction. Reference to which insurer the vehicle has been allocated appears on the registration receipt, which can be displayed on screen and printed.

There are two tables to assist you in finding registration and CTP insurance costs when you don’t know the date the vehicle will be registered. Adding the applicable registration fee to the corresponding CTP premium will provide the total registration and CTP insurance payable, excluding optional fees. Click here for the registration fees table, click here for the table of lowest offered premiums by class and the dates on which premiums come into effect, or click here for a .csv file of the table’s data. The CTP Regulator provides this as an information source only, and it is correct as at publication date. The CTP premium table will be updated around two months in advance of premium changes becoming effective.

Owner choice

An owner of a brand new motor vehicle with a registration period of more than three months can change to a different CTP Insurer than the one automatically allocated from five days after registration until the end of the first three months of the registration period. This can be done through their mySA GOV account, phoning Service SA on 13 10 84, or going to a Service SA customer service centre.

The CTP insurance for a brand new vehicle fact sheet is a useful resource to provide a customer a step-by-step guide to changing a CTP Insurer in their mySA GOV account.

Changing insurer will not change the premium price and there are no additional charges to make this change.

An owner of a brand new motor vehicle with a registration period of three months only may choose a different CTP Insurer when they renew their registration if they wish.

Transfer a registration

An EzyReg ‘Transfer of Registration’ transaction is processed when a registered vehicle is sold to a new motor vehicle owner. The current CTP Insurer of the registered vehicle is transferred to the new owner. The new owner may choose a different CTP Insurer when they renew their registration if they wish.

Renew a registration

The ‘Renew a Registration’ transaction is used to renew a vehicle registration in the same owner’s name. The owner’s choice of CTP Insurer is recorded on the ‘Insurer Selection’ screen.
